Of course, I follow her blog and love that she shares her Montessori resources and ideas, but I figured I should look into the subject more if I plan on doing it also. So I googled... and I found this page that talks about how to teach geography using the New York Times. I was drawn to #7 - "Geography isn’t just about places on a map; it’s about the
people, culture, history and landscape of those places" Then I saw a review of a neat little kit called Little Passports. It is a suitcase for kids to start learning about the world through letters each month. The kids get to learn about the places and get excited about the mail they receive each month. There is a subscription and initial cost though, and it seems a bit pricey to me.

What ever happened to pen pals? It seems like such a better idea. Then you can also ask questions and continue to learn for longer than just one month (one letter) about that particular area. I know some schools do pen pals with other schools like this class that has a partner class in South Africa. Then there is also Flat Stanley. I think this is an awesome way to have kids learn about the world, seeing there own art in those places, especially when accompanied by the books. I also think it would be good to introduce the children to missionaries around the world. I already have connections to some and our church supports some missionaries. Finding a few to write to and perhaps get some photos back would be fun.
I'm sure I will find and think of more as I continue to search but I wanted to compile it so I have it all in one place to come back to later.JustCoreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02062129612964587316noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8864699029851126744.post-80175036576085348882013-01-26T20:28:00.000-06:002013-02-01T20:37:45.133-06:00My first completed quiet bookI had to cheat and just get a quiet book done. I was overwhelmed with all the ideas I had in mind and not in the mood to do MORE cutting for the quiet book coop I am involved in. So I sat down during nap time and threw together a design and some cutting for a mini bug quiet book (inspired by buggy-for-you-quiet-book) My book is only 4 inches square and was put together with a bunch of hot glue (absolutely no sewing)
Here are the pages I used:
Ribbon wing drangonfly and ant crawling on leaf
Mega Bloks is the only name brand I do want because then it will fit with the rest of our Mega Bloks.

Mega Bloks Build and Learn - I like both ABCs (pictured above) and 123s so whichever, I like that they are educational since they can learn letters/numbers while building. I am sticking with the largest size of building blocks since Ri still puts everything in his mouth. Eventually we will move down in size to duplos, but not yet. Also from Mega Bloks I like the Town Rescue Center (pictured below) since Ais has been really into firemen and police cars (loves the sirens that we hear)

I have also sarted looking into peg boards like this one: Jumbo Peg Board. Something that can be used for colors, numbers, fine motor, and patterns. And tanagram type activities also for patterns, colors, and shapes: Beginner-Pattern-Blocks (pictured)

I have yet to make more than Felt breakfast food so Soft play food is also on this list. Something like one of these: Lil-Shopper-Play-Set (pictured) , Picnic-Play-Set , or Fill-and-Spill-Picnic-Basket.

Some other items I might suggest would be some sort of learning to dress toy like: Learn-Dress-Activity-Farmer , Rhythm instruments (like Hape-Rhythm-Set pictured below), and a Bead Maze that also can be used for colors, numbers, and fine motor.

Basically I am looking for items that are educational (or can be used that way), things that can be used with what we already have, little to no noise, and things intended for about age two - so both boys are able to play with them. Also things that are good for self directed play.

May he give you the desire of your heart
and make all your plans succeed.
May we shout for joy over your victory
and lift up our banners in the name of our God.

Here is our decor in full, with the pumpkins we had made for Halloween decor (though i did take down the jack o lanterns we had made as well)... daddy's turkey went missing (I guess his foot wouldn't have fit on the page even if he did make one) .... Rock said it was in the oven and Hubby said it was on the calendar.... You can tell he isn't from a hunting family... he didn't know that was a pheasant not a turkey until I told him. He laughed it off and asked if I was going to tell anyone about it......

I have completed the Teemo shirt I was starting last time I

It is much more difficult to use this technique with multiple stencils because
freezer paper doesn’t stick as well to
already painted shirt (at least not in my experience). I had four stencils
since there was so much detail.

Anyway, littler man has a checkup tomorrow... his 9 month appt. I can't believe it has been that long already!

Sooner than I know it he will be running around with his brother and getting into everything... wait they already do that.

I should probably be cleaning or sleeping while the boys are asleep.. but I never am tired when they are too... does anyone else ever feel that way? Entirely too tired when it is time to wake up and wide awake when you should be sleeping?

Random is this blog entry, I know. Maybe I am more tired than I realize.

The boys helped me pick out a small pumpkin today. When we got home Daddy put it on his head, and now Rock insists that he is a pumpkin head:
I started simple with just one stencil. And though there were three colors in the giraffe shirt they were meant to blend. (both giraffe and transportation shirts were painted by rock after I applied the stencils)

Um, wow, I should have done this sooner. I just keep looking for more designs to try now though i don't have the clothes for it now... i am addicted and have cut out more stencils than i have tried. Plus, since the stencil is in place, Rock can help me. He loves painting and has had a lot of fun creating his own shirts... maybe more than me? Here are the giraffe and transportation shirts we created.
I also made a Link shirt from one of hubby's old work shirts that was stained to the point that he didnt want to wear it anymore. He is now willing to wear it again since i brought new life to it and even took it to a friends house to show off :)

Yup.. .definitely loving freezer paper. great way to cover up stains and make fun designs that are one of a kind!
Rock really has been enjoying them and I love that he is learning some at the same time. They have just enough entertainment to go with learning that it makes it great for both of us and fun :) There are also quite a few funny phrases spread throughout all of them, i've even caught hubby laughin a few times.
Leap, the oldest brother of the three main kids(frogs) seems to have a favorite phrase "Okey dokey artichokey" - occuring at least once per video. And Tad, the youngest, is the main one doing the learning with his brother and sister, Lily, helping... also assisting are the children's father, Frog, and the quirky professor Quigley who is the inventor of the factory tools to train the letters and numbers.

So I guess I am pretty much reviewing these movies and my overall analysis is that these movies are great for my two year old (probably for a couple years) Plus there is a little something for the adults who happen to be in the same room with the amusing antics added.
There is one reoccurring phrase I don't quite understand though... "Needs Salt" - I have heard it at least three times while the characters are eating some sort of food and I can't find if there is more of a reason behind it. One of the foods, popcorn, makes since, but why do the kids say "Needs salt" after tasting tea and ice cream? I may never know....

“You

Some of Rock's favorites right now are: Cars, Megamind, and The Tigger Movie. I also allow him to watch major parts of Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs and Toy Story. We fore go the mutated food scenes in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and all the parts that take place at Sid's house in Toy Story (I skip from when they are leaving pizza planet to when they start chasing the moving truck). Trying to keep our son from seeing certain images is still in our control at this point and I, by the grace of God, intend to do just that.

So movies that we do approve (all the way through) for our boys at this time: VeggieTales, Cars, Megamind, The Tale of Depereaux, The Tigger Movie, The AristoCats, Joseph: King of Dreams, and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron

Today I looked up some reviews on How to Train your Dragon to see what others thought of it. I have seen it but not with criteria for what my sons should watch in mind. I found one really good review at the blog: Thinking Christian I especially like the comment that was left... I had never seen it that way before but it is so true! I also like this review site: http://www.movieguide.org/reviews.html
After reading the reviews I decided this movie is not for my boys at such young ages.

What is more Pinteresting than some yarn creations?

I have been slowly increasing my ability in crochet with some help from free tutorials and patterns I find online. Here are some (of many) that caught my attention on Pinterest:

I need to get back to using the diapers, as well as repurposing and recycling items rather than just trashing everything. We even plan on using old amazon and diaper boxes to build a fort and play kitchen in the spare room for the boys. Homemade and small local companies would also be work towards being greener (rather than big box companies!) We have started toward less processed foods... I don't know if that is greener but definitely healthier :)

I have used the interenet to help with my pre homeschooling for Rock and have found several ideas without Pinterest... but now with pinterest I have found so much more. Previously I really liked www.totallytots.blogspot.com and all the blogs associated with them, as well as notimeforflashcards and the activity mom (see my left sidebar for more). Through Pinterest I jsut found two others that I have started to turn to: filthywizadry.com and mydeliciousambiguity.com - both have great crafts i want to try

Alos for bible crafts I love ministry-to-children.com

Just a quick post.. i feel like i have abandoned my blog for pinterest lol

I have a new addiction. Sure it seemed harmless at first but now I am hooked. I was just wanting a few more ideas for crafts and things for my boys. But Pinterest came with so much more!

I am often looking for crafts and cute things for my boys. Sewing, crochet, paper craft, you name it.... if I think I can manage it then I pin it.

Here are some of my recent finds that I want to try...

We named our sons with meanings, hopeful and prayerful that they would grow into them. Our first son has names that are both spiritual and earthly (Rock... is earth... ha). Our second we named fire and water (Rain). Both boys have first names that are basically opposed to the middle name but work together just the same. I mentioned in a previous post why we chose 'Rock.' Now, 'Rain' we chose because of the meaning "abundant blessings from above". No other reason like when we Chose Rock's name. However, we have been showered with God's love since his birth ... pun intended ;D

Rain has seen rain three of the four times that he has been out of the house, the first three in fact. On the way home from the hospital and both doctors appointments he has had. The most recent time we went out I was thankful for the beautiful weather because it was just a leisurely day out... but how is that for God showing a token of love for us? Also, Rain has bright blue eyes right now; I don't know if they will remain this way, but still. So just these couple of items show how God has blessed us and honored the name we chose. Small things to most people have such an awesome impact on our lives.

I pray you will be able to see the blessings God has put in your life this new year!

It has not been a boring year, that's for sure.
This is the third city (two states) that we have lived in this year. We moved in March then in September, I do not want to move again anytime soon. Between March and August Rock became more social through library visits and going to the parks and I became more fit, by the same activities (1.5 mile walk to library and half mile more to city park). I tried to go across town about twice a week and there was a small park at our apartment complex for days we didn't walk. Hubby started back to college in August as a full time student and that is why we moved again. It was an hour to school for him, now the college is less than a mile away, so our family has been able to spend more time together when he isn't in class. He has really enjoyed the learning process this time around, I guess it is easier to want to learn when you aren't bogged down by work also (like he was at the previous schools). Rock and I started on his ABC's in September, though the process of homeschooling has slowed quite a bit since the arrival of Rain. I'm sure I will get back into the swing of things soon (like sleeping and eating when I should). The biggest change this year was adding the fourth member to our family :) So moving, Rock becoming toddlerized, school for both hubby and Rock, and Rain coming into the world... I guess that is were the year has gone. Also...

I came to the realization that I have a one month old (as of yesterday) and a twentyone month old (in a couple days). They are growing so fast! Last time I blogged about my family lil Rain had just arrived. now he is not so little anymore... ok so he was never really little, at least not since he left the womb. I was thinking late last night that if my babies keep getting bigger I don't know what I am going to do. Then I thought if I have a little six pound baby i won't really know what to do either. My brother in laws youngest daughter (one day older than Rain) and my sisters daughter (now 4) were both only 6 pounds and that is so tiny compared to my boys. I thought the deliveries went quick pushing out big boys I couldn't imagine having a tiny babe. Anywho, just some random thoughts I had.

Oh, the hats in the pic above were made by me :) I was a pattern tester for Tricity Hokes Sock Monkey hat.I didn't add all the options and am still a fairly new crocheter compared to most but i think they are cute! And I was able to make both just in time for Christmas.

We had a laid back quiet Christmas this year. Just our family of four, a good Christmas dinner, and a birthday cake for Jesus. The only presents the boys received were the hats and some gifts from family. Hubby and I also didn't exchange presents, except I made him a hat too. (no monkey on his though) We don't want to Christmas about "getting" so we try to tone down the presents they receive. Rock and I created a nativity out of recycled toilet paper tubes, a pop tarts box, and one piece of paper with figures I drew for him to color:

Recycled Nativity Scene

Rock played with his nativity again yesterday so I was very glad that we made it. On the pop tart box I drew 4 different scenes (for each side) to help tell the story. One side had the door to the inn with a 'no vacancy sign'. Another an open field for the shepherd which was continued to the next side to show Bethlehem in the distance with a star above the stable. And the final side, shown above, is of course, the stable. Rock's attention span didn't last for the whole story after creation of hte project but i let him play with it while I at least told the story (without props). He may not of understood yet but I still wanted to introduce the real Christmas story. I hope we can make it a family tradition to sit down and retell the Christmas story in a way the children can interact: like the nativity scene we did this year, a play, having them illustrate it, the possibilities are endless.

I guess now that this year is ending I need to set my goals for the coming year (no, not new years resolutions, just plain, old goals). One main one is to get back into teaching Rock and develop something for Rain as well. I also would like to craft more, I keep saying it but need to just do it.

Hubby and I have prayed in the New Year the past couple years since we got married and plan on doing it again this year. I hope you have had a good 2011 and that you and your families have a blessed new year!
I usually stick to giveaways that are for cloth diapers and other useful items for the kiddos. But during the holidays you can enter for all sorts of giveaways... clothes, giftcards, toys, toys, and many other items. So I have entered for everything I think our family might be able to use. Though I have only won one diaper so far this holiday season, I am still hopeful.
